Frequently asked questions

What is Heroes Quest Therapy?

Heroes Quest Therapy provides immersive, transformative tabletop role-playing experiences, blending the imaginative magic of Dungeons & Dragons™ (2024/25 ruleset) with evidence-based Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Every participant embarks on two interconnected quests: one within the thrilling fantasy game sessions and another in one-on-one individual therapy sessions, exploring their personal journey toward a richer, more meaningful life.

How does tabletop role-playing therapy work?

Through guided, imaginative storytelling, participants collaboratively create characters whose journeys mirror their own personal goals and values. As the characters boldly face challenges and make meaningful choices, participants naturally experience a sense of agency and empowerment. ACT processes organically emerge, revealing how heroes adapt and thrive. By understanding these processes, participants can translate the lessons of heroism from the game into their real lives, enhancing emotional resilience, flexibility, and a commitment to valued actions.

Who can benefit from Heroes Quest Therapy?

Adults of all ages seeking deeper personal insight, emotional resilience, improved social skills, or simply a creative and engaging way to explore life’s challenges can profoundly benefit. This program isn't just for young adventurers or experienced gamers; Boomers, Gen-Xers, and beyond are warmly invited to discover the hero within themselves through the transformative power of shared storytelling and therapeutic exploration with no prior gaming experience required.

What about insurance, location, and getting started?

Heroes Quest Therapy is currently preparing for launch. We are in the process of credentialing with insurance panels, finding the perfect welcoming space in Wichita, Kansas, and setting everything in motion. We've launched our website early to connect with interested adventurers. If you’d like to join the journey or simply stay informed about our progress, please fill out our contact form. We’ll reach out personally as soon as our quest officially begins!

What commitment is required of participants?

Adventurers chosen for Heroes Quest Therapy are asked to embrace the Heroes Quest Oath—an ACT-inspired code of honor and commitment:

  • Acceptance: Courageously face and acknowledge challenges without avoidance.
  • Defusion: Learn to see thoughts as tools, not truths, stepping back to observe rather than getting caught up.
  • Present Moment Awareness: Engage fully and mindfully in every encounter, both in-game and in daily life.
  • Self as Context: Embrace flexibility in identity, understanding you are more than your struggles.
  • Values: Identify and commit to the principles and virtues that truly matter to you.
  • Committed Action: Consistently act with courage and persistence toward your chosen values, both as your character and as yourself.

By choosing to join, you agree to courageously engage in your therapeutic adventure, offering your best effort to apply these heroic principles both in-game and in your everyday life. Together, we will bravely face life's inevitable challenges, learning not only to respond differently but to thrive heroically in the face of adversity.
